The Netherlands is small enough that any location is within two hours of any other by road, and dense enough that five regions cover most of what international productions come here to film. Each location below reflects what productions actually shoot there, how access works, and where the permit process gets complicated.

Amsterdam

Amsterdam works for most project types. The canal belt — a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2010 — is the most-filmed area of the city, covering roughly 165 canals and 1,281 bridges. Filming from the street beside a canal requires different permits than filming on the water or from a bridge. Boat access, mooring points, and canal traffic all need coordination with the municipality.

Beyond the canals, Amsterdam covers a wider range than most productions expect. Jordaan offers narrow streets, café culture, and residential character. The Museum Quarter works for cultural and highbrow visual identity. Amsterdam Noord and NDSM Wharf give industrial and post-industrial textures. De Pijp and Oud-West cover contemporary urban residential.

Access notes: the historic centre, Museum Quarter, and De Oude Pijp are increasingly restricted for productions. Amsterdam actively encourages crews to consider locations outside the tourist zones. Drone filming in the centre is largely blocked due to Schiphol proximity — no-fly zone, with exceptions requiring ILT approval.

Groningen

Groningen sits in the north — 2 hours by road from Amsterdam — and works well for productions that want a Dutch city without the tourist density of the capital. Home to the University of Groningen (one of Europe’s oldest, founded 1614), the city has a strong student and academic character.

The Martinitoren — 97-metre medieval tower in the city centre — is the most recognizable landmark. The Groninger Museum offers postmodern architecture designed by Alessandro Mendini and Coop Himmelb(l)au. The Prinsentuin botanical gardens work for period and nature shots. Der Aa-kerk provides medieval religious architecture.

Groningen’s smaller municipal film office is easier to work with than Amsterdam’s on standard shoots. Processing times tend to be faster, and location fees lower.

Groningen

Friesland

Friesland is a northern province of coastline, lakes, and the Wadden Sea (UNESCO World Heritage since 2009). It includes the Waddeneilanden — a chain of inhabited islands including Vlieland, Terschelling, Ameland, and Schiermonnikoog.

The province works for productions that need expansive skies, remote coastal locations, traditional Frisian villages, and low-population landscapes. Frisian is an officially recognized language separate from Dutch, which sometimes matters for productions with linguistic or cultural focus.

Access to the Waddeneilanden requires ferry crossings that need to be built into shoot schedules — Vlieland is roughly 90 minutes from Harlingen, Terschelling 2 hours. Filming in the Wadden Sea itself is regulated under UNESCO protection and requires environmental clearance for anything beyond handheld observational shooting.

Frisian coastal weather is notably windier than the rest of the Netherlands, which affects sound recording and drone operations.

Rotterdam

Rotterdam is the Netherlands’s second city and its architectural counterweight to Amsterdam. Because most of the city was destroyed in 1940 and rebuilt from the ground up, it reads as modernist and contemporary — the opposite of Amsterdam’s period character.

Key locations include the Erasmus Bridge (818 metres, opened 1996), the Cube Houses (Kubuswoningen) designed by Piet Blom, the Markthal (modern indoor market with residential arch), the Van Nelle Factory (UNESCO World Heritage, former tobacco factory converted to creative offices), and Delfshaven (one of the few historic neighborhoods that survived the bombing).

The Port of Rotterdam is the largest in Europe and the busiest port outside East Asia — 42 kilometres of docks, container terminals, oil refineries, and industrial infrastructure. Filming inside the port zone requires coordination with the Port Authority and, for many areas, security clearances that take weeks to arrange.

Rotterdam’s municipal film office is generally faster than Amsterdam’s for standard shoots and more open to complex or unconventional productions.

Rotterdam

Utrecht

Utrecht is a medieval canal city, roughly 45 minutes south of Amsterdam. Its canals are lower than Amsterdam’s — the wharves sit at water level rather than street level — which creates a visually distinct filming environment.

The Dom Tower at 112 metres is the tallest church tower in the Netherlands and defines the skyline. Domplein and the surrounding medieval centre offer period backdrops with fewer productions competing for access than Amsterdam. Oudegracht — the central canal — is the most photographed street in the city.

Outside the centre, Kasteel de Haar (30 minutes from Utrecht) is the largest castle in the Netherlands: 200+ rooms, formal gardens, moat, and grand ballroom. It functions as an active filming location and events venue.

Utrecht permits process faster than Amsterdam and Rotterdam for standard shoots — often 3 to 5 working days rather than 5 to 10. Location fees are also lower on average.

Finding a location scout in the Netherlands

When evaluating your project in our first discussion, we will take notes about your needs regarding where to shoot. One of the key aspects of any video production is location. Your production coordinator in the Netherlands will be able to recommend the right locations this way, based on your exact needs and on what the end goal of your project might be.

On the first discovery call, we identify what constraints matter most — access speed, cost, exclusivity, specific visual features — and narrow to 3 to 5 candidate locations for each scene or sequence.

Physical scouting trips can be arranged with the visiting director, or we can handle remote scouting with detailed video walkthroughs and reference photography. For time-compressed productions, we work from stock location libraries and prior project references to move faster.
